Are training videos still useful for your business?

What does the phrase ‘training video’ conjure up for you? Thoughts of boring animatics and voice over, topics so dull that not even an aerating painter would choose to engage, maybe onboarding or health & safety training? It certainly does for us. So, are they still useful for your business? The answer, of course, is yes. Video is one of the most effective mediums for conveying complex information, fast. So when Business Surrey, a Surrey County Council service helping businesses, start, grow and thrive, asked us to create a video series targeted at time-poor business owners, we created a product designed to be the antithesis of the training videos you may have watched before. They wanted modern, slick, time-efficient. Luckily, those are our middle names.
The Marketing Toolkit by Business Surrey features marketing professional Daniel Chidley and a number of business advisors from the Business Surrey team as they discuss in ‘fireside chat’ format a detailed breakdown of four key areas of marketing for small business. This structure creates a more effective educational product thanks to 4 reasons:
1. A custom-developed worksheet (The ‘Marketing Toolkit’) allows users to work through tasks as they watch, with clear demarcations of when to pause and complete certain tasks baked into the videos.
2. Daniel also developed two fictional businesses: ‘Knits By Sam’ and ‘Ash’s Accountancy Services’ to give service or product businesses watch-along examples and a completed template of the toolkit, further enhancing the engagement & learning efficacy of the video series.
3. Variety in how the on-screen talent engages with the subject-matter expert and directly with the viewer, so the audience feels part of the conversation, instead of being spoken at.
4. The creative direction constructs a relaxed and friendly aesthetic: lo-fi music non-diagetically underscores the visuals, talent recline in large chic armchairs in an east-London style industrial studio, and warm tungsten fresnel lighting is visible in frame to reveal the fourth wall. All of which both disarms the viewer and builds the atmosphere outlined.
The series is also divided into four easily digestible 30min segments so viewers can start & stop as needed. After a month in pre-production & scripting, we captured the full series over one day of production in Studio 2 at our neighbouring Tannery Film Studios, Woking, Surrey. After another month in post-production, we were extremely pleased with the resulting 4-video series.
